Maui

MauiBack home after a wonderful few weeks away and I couldn’t have asked for a better trip. Here are a few highlights:

Old Lahaina Luau– we did this our first night on the island which I strongly recommend, it is a great way to slip right into vacation mode. Buy your tickets early though as they sell out far in advance! Lei, buffet, great scenery and open bar are included!

The road to Hana– everyone says it and I will too, it’s a must! I read about how long it takes but definitely underestimated that. We got off to a later start then most (we didn’t leave till 11) but I think it still worked well. We stopped at Coconut hut for a refresher, Koki Beach, 7 Sacred Pools, Venus Pools, Red Sand Beach and Lindbergh’s grave before turning around. My family did the southern side around the volcano and they said it was fine in their rental car.The “town of Hana” was basically non existent so if you’re looking for a good lunch- pack it yourself!

Tips for this: Pack snacks, bottled water, sunscreen, runners or wet shoes for the pools (you have to climb over a lot of rocks), and some cd’s (radio is in and out).

Mama’s Fish House- make a reservation! We didn’t have one but we arrived at 11am when it opened to make one and they were able to get 6 of us in for lunch that day. This restaurant is iconic Maui- it has been there since 1973 and has played host to every celebrity you can think of! We ordered a bunch of appetizers so that we could try everything and we left very happy! If you take one thing away from this, I hope it’s what I am about to say. Get. The. Cal.a.mari. It will be the best thing you’ll ever eat! It’s a calamari steak, thinly breaded and sliced to accentuate the perfect texture. Oh my goodness it’s amazing. Oh and the view doesn’t hurt either. Bon appetit!

Wailea Golf Course– two courses to choose from the Gold which is more challenging and the Emerald which is more scenic. C had already played 3 courses by the time we played this so I got to choose and went for the Emerald.

Kapaula Golf Course and Spa– this was a nice his and hers day. C golfed and I spa’d! No pictures from the course, but this was the view from the spa. With your service you get access to the facilities for the day. What I did- and would encourage everyone to do is book a late appt at3 or 4 in the afternoon, but arrive first thing in the morning. C had a 930 tee time so he dropped me off at 9. I had a smoothie, lounged in the sun, swam, had lunch, lounged some more then showered before my massage. The facility is incredible and provided everything including disposable (though great quality) brushes, combs, blow dryers, curling and straightening irons, tooth brushes, sun screen and every other toiletry you could need. I showered, had my outdoor massage (pictured below) then took my time doing my hair and getting ready for the night. It was such a perfect day!

Restaurant recommendations:

Ko– get the Spicy Tuna Poke Bowl and the Oishi Sushi

Maui Tacos– Always go for the fish, no questions asked

Tortilla’s Burrito Company– fish taco or breakfast wrap

Paia Fish Market–  get the fish tacos… noticing a theme?

Mama’s Fish House– scroll up for all the details but trust me on the calamari and the lobster guac

Kihei Caffe for the banana macadamia nut pancakes- only open for breakfast

Last but not least- Humuhumunukunukuapua’a at the Grand Wailea- it’s all good but the view is even better

Final thoughts:

Rent a convertible! We had a Mustang and it was soo much fun!

Always go for the Pupus- they’re appetizers!

C played the Kapalua Plantation, Wailea Emerald, The Dunes at Maui Lani- more on this in another post

We went up Haleakala  which was neat. If you are interested in this sort of thing then go for it. It was hard for me to appreciate because  it was cloudy that high up (10,000 ft!), 35 degrees lower than at the bottom, and the steam rolling around prevented you from really seeing anything. In hindsight I would still do it, I just wouldn’t expect to see Australia.
